God Is Our Secure Dwelling

God Is Our Secure Dwelling

Whoever listens to me will dwell safely,
And will be secure (margin says at ease), without fear of evil.
Proverbs 1:33

Father in heaven, the whole world is in upheaval at present with the ongoing fallout from COVID. Fear and anger are rampant, seeping into our thoughts and bodies. Some are fearful of catching the virus and angry at those who refuse to be vaxed. Others are fearful of the shot and the consequences of losing jobs and are angry at those who are taking away their right to choose. Feelings of isolation, rejection and abandonment from friends and family engulf us.

 But… yet… nevertheless... we run to You. You are our secure dwelling, our quiet resting place. Others may be displeased with us for our choices, but You rejoice over us with gladness.

 We rest in Your name El Shaddai – Power of the Many Breasted One. You are the All-Sufficient One, The God Who Is More Than Enough. You have a thousand ways to provide for us of which we know nothing. When you hear us cry you are like a nursing mother who has a let-down of milk at the sound of her baby’s cry.

 We marvel at the love which flows from Your breast through Your Son Jesus. Thank You that in Him,  you have given Your very self to us. We seek our nourishment in Him today. We rest confidently in the knowledge that if You did not spare Your own Son but delivered him up for us all, then You will surely give us all needful things.

 When our thoughts race in negative directions, fearing everything to do with COVID, how we will pay the rent or mortgage, wondering where we will live and how we will survive, remind us of all the ways you have provided for us, protected us, and guided us throughout our lives. Then we will be like a weaned child -a child who is at rest, confident and secure in his mother’s love because he has spent months nurtured, comforted, satiated at her breast.

 Satiate and quiet us with Your presence today. Pour out Your love into us and through us to others.

 We ask these things please in Jesus’ name. Amen

Supporting Verses

The work of righteousness will be peace,
And the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever,
My people will dwell in a peaceful habitation,
In secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places,
Though hail come down from the forest,
And the city is brought low in humiliation.
Isaiah 32:17-19

For thus says the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel:
“In returning and rest you shall be saved;
In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.
Isaiah 30:15

The LORD your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.
Zephaniah 3:17

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am El Shaddai;*walk before Me and be blameless. And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.”
Genesis 17:1
*The Hebrew word El Shaddai has been translated as Almighty God in English. While there is some debate about the meaning, the root word ‘shad’ means breast.
The Covenant Keeping God appeared to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob by this name (Exodus 6:3). This name is associated with fruitfulness and blessings of the heavens, the earth, the breasts (shad) and the womb (Genesis 49:25). See also Genesis 28:3-4; 35:11;

What then shall we say to all these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things.
Romans 8:31,32

Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul,
Like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, hope in the LORD
From this time forth and forever.
Psalm 131:2,3
